A Sensory Trail is proposed in the churchyard at West Monkton Parish church.
The proposals include raised seating areas and a range of flower beds and shrubs. The three areas involved are the area in front of the stocks, followed by the raised boundary area just beyond, then a grassed seating area near the back of the church. All three areas are free of gravestones and are presently grassed with some Spring bulbs which would be retained. There are no ‘recent’ graves in the areas of this ‘closed’ churchyard, and low maintenance is seen as a priority. The sensory areas are intended to offer visitors tranquil seating areas in quiet surroundings, and will enjoy aspects of the recently restored South side of the church and the lovely grounds. Funding has been agreed with the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the St. Augustine’s Heritage Project grant towards the Heritage Trail.
Selworthy School is keen to be involved in the proposals, with their students keen to participate as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for 2017. It is hoped and intended that the areas will offer seating and planting which will appeal to everyone, including those with a wide range of disabilities. The proposals are seen as part of the wider mission of the church in the Benefice to ‘ know, share and spread the love of God in our community’.
The PCC respects the fact there will be many who have loved ones buried in the churchyard, and wants to be sensitive and respectful, so if you have any comments or can offer help and/or materials, please contact Kevin Davenport on 01823 413628. Thank you.
